There may be pockets in the State where students have to traverse long distances to reach colleges. But Holenarsipur constituency, represented by Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna, is teeming with colleges and more are on their way.
With the State Cabinet on Thursday giving clearance to set up a government first grade college for women with residential facility at Haradanahalli, the native place of Mr. Revanna’s father and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Holenarsipur will get its eighth government first grade college.
In fact, at 28, Hassan has the highest number of government degree colleges in any district in the State. Interestingly, the law college at Paduvalahippe had to be shifted elsewhere on account of lack of admissions six years ago.
Mr. Revanna, at a Teachers’ Day programme here last week, said he planned to get a government engineering college sanctioned at Mosale Hosahalli soon.
H.Y. Shreesha Kumar, Joint Director (Mysuru Division) of the Department of Collegiate Education, told The Hindu that the proposed first grade college would require eight acres of land. The Minister has promised land for the college. “The campus will include a college, hostel, library, and residential quarters for the staff. The infrastructure will be sufficient to accommodate 200 to 250 students. The department’s plan is to open the college by the next academic year,” he said.
The State Cabinet has approved allotment of ₹15 crore for the construction of the college.
