Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday assured Legislative Council that he will announce action to be taken within 48 hours against those involved in filing of First Information Report (FIR) against Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti.

His response came after members demanded that action be initiated against police officials for violating norms in registering a FIR under Atrocities Act against Mr. Horatti even though he was not on the scene. Members accused that while a sub inspector has been suspended in relation to the case, the superintendent of police who is accountable has not even been transferred.

Acknowledging that the incident should not have happened since the chairman comes second in the protocol after Governor, Mr. Bommai said, “I have sought a full report from the director general of police and we will take action against those involved. I want to know at whose instruction was the FIR filed.” Not happy with the chief minister’s reply, members pointed out that it had been nearly a month since the incident occurred, and urged for a concrete reply. In response, Mr. Bommai said, “Within 48 hours, I will announce whatever action has to be taken in this case.”
