“Art should not be just limited to drawing classes; sculpture designing – clay models and craft works hold equal significance in developing one’s hobby,” said Basavalingaiah Swamy, sculptor.
The 60-year-old has served as a drawing teacher at schools in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for 30 years. To utilise his retirement fruitfully and to promote clay modelling, he travels across States to teach young minds about sculpture art.
Mr. Swamy hails from Narayanpet in Mahbubnagar district of Telangana. He trained in sculpture art from Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT), New Delhi, and has published a Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW) book consisting of 111 clay modelling work and 30 paper craft that are useful for higher-primary students. He saidthe art form can be considered as a good career option.
Talking about the harmful impact of oil-painted or plaster-of-Paris idols, he called upon students to create awareness on the use of eco-friendly idols. Mr. Swamy is training students in making eco-friendly Ganesh idols at a three-day workshop organised by the Department of Fine Arts at Nutan Vidyalaya Degree College.
