The officials of Department of Women and Child Welfare have averted an attempt to marry a minor girl in Sorab taluk.

A 16-year-old girl from Heggodu village in Sorab taluk was to be married to Lokesh (26), a farmer from Gudavi village of the same taluk. The marriage was scheduled to be held at the groom's residence on Monday.

The officials of the Department received an anonymous call on the age of the bride and arrived at the venue a few minutes before the marriage was solemnised. On verification of the documents, it was found that she was a minor. The officials apprised the parents of both the parties on the evils of child marriage and the legal punishment that it would attract.

The marriage was cancelled at the behest of the officials. The officials also got an undertaking from the parents of the girl that they would arrange her marriage after she attains 18-years-age. G. Chidanandappa, Child Development and Project Officer told The Hindu that the girl was produced before the Child Welfare Committee later.
