Yeddyurappa criticises govt. for failure to handle farm issues effectively

BJP Vice-President and the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has warned that the BJP would launch the second phase of its Raitha Chaitanya Yatra in October if the State government continued to work in a nonchalant manner while addressing the problems faced by farmers.

Addressing the Raitha Chaitanya Yatra at the market yard of the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee in Jewargi town on Monday, Mr. Yeddyurappa criticised the State government for its failure to address the farmers issues effectively and also its inability to initiate confidence building measures to prevent farmers from committing suicide due to loan burden and crop failure.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the State government and the Ministers had remained insensitive to the problems of farmers. Despite many a farmer committing suicide in Kalaburagi district, neither Minister of State for Agriculture Krishna Byre Gowda nor Minister for Revenue Srinivas Prasad had cared to visit the district and review the drought situation. They had not even visited the families of farmers who committed suicide, he said.

He said that the State government has not submitted a preliminary report of loss suffered by farmers to the Union government to get additional amount for taking up drought relief work and pay compensation to those who had lost crops. Even Congressmen were not happy with the functioning of the government and leaders such as the former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna had openly expressed their displeasure over the functioning of the government and its failure to tackle the drought situation.

Instead of attending to the issues faced by farmers due to the failure of crops, Mr. Yeddyurappa said, the ruling Congress, which could not muster majority in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike elections, was using money and muscle power to win over fence-sitting Independent corporators and come to power in the mahanagara palike by illegal means.

Later, Mr. Yeddyurappa paid a compensation of Rs. 25,000 on behalf of the BJP to the wife of Manappa Naikodi of Yalwar village in Jewargi taluk who committed suicide this May due to the failure of crops and mounting debts.

The former Ministers Shobha Karandlagi, BJP General Secretary and MLA C.T. Ravi, MP B. Sriramulu and the former legislator Doddappa Gowda Patil Naribol spoke.
