Results out, the race begins

June 02, 2015 09:31 am | Updated November 16, 2021 05:03 pm IST - BENGALURU:

It was an end to the misery of over 1.53 lakh students who participated in a delay-hit Common Entrance Test (CET) process as the results of the exam were finally announced on Monday. Students aspiring to get government or government-quota seats in medicine, engineering and farm science courses, among others, were forced to wait for nearly a week beyond the actual schedule for results.

The government was forced to put off the results from May 26 to Monday after demand for the same grew following ‘discrepancies’ in the II Pre-University results. It may be recalled that the CET itself was postponed from April 29 and 30 to May 12 and 13 due to a nation-wide transport strike.

Though the number of students who wrote the test this year were more than last year, the number of students who were eligible for admissions to the sought-after medical (and dental) seats were only 19,275, compared to the 22,622 last year. But the race to engineering seats appears to have gotten tougher, with over 1.12 lakh students qualifying for admissions compared to 1.01 lakh last year.

However, the government is yet to announce the seat matrix for the academic year 2015-16, which is expected to be displayed on June 13.

As for the top ranks, it was a tussle between the same set of candidates – a feature that is seen every year – with only the order of ranks changing in streams such as medical and ISMH. Interestingly, students from “integrated PU colleges,” a concept that the Department of Pre-University Education refuses to acknowledge, figured in the top 10 ranks in several streams.

What next?

The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has warned that assignment of ranks does not confirm the right to select seats for candidates until completion of verification of documents, which begins on June 5.
