The centenary celebrations of the University of Mysore will be held from July 27, the day on which the varsity was founded. The university will invite President Pranab Mukherjee to inaugurate the year-long celebrations.

Union Minister for Human Resource Development Smriti Irani, Governor and Chancellor Vajubhai Vala and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will be invited to grace the occasion.

The ball has been set rolling with the launch of the fete’s logo and website. The centenary logo has been designed by Pramoda Devi Wadiyar who is an alumnus of the university.

A high-level centenary celebration committee, including the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, former Vice-Chancellors, litterateurs and distinguished scientists, has been constituted. The Mysore University Alumni Association will be formed this month.

Vice-Chancellor K.S. Rangappa told presspersons here on Thursday that Rs. 100 crore had been sought from the Centre for the centenary. A proposal on the university’s centenary plans had been submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), he said.

Funds had been sought from the State government to build a state-of-the-art technology-driven international convention centre at a cost of Rs. 30 crore as part of the centenary.

A sum of Rs. 10 crore had been sought from the University Grants Commission (UGC) under a Special Heritage Scheme for holding the fete.

Awards

The university has constituted three prestigious centenary awards starting this year. The awards are: Bharat Ratna Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Centenary Award for Social Science; Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya Centenary Award for Technology, and Bharat Ratna Dr. C.N.R. Rao Centenary Award for Science. The award will carry a cash prize and gold-plated citation. The Vice-Chancellor also announced that centenary merit scholarships would be given to 100 economically-backward students for pursuing under-graduation and post-graduation in the university.
