Seven days after the death of IAS officer D. K. Ravi, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced in the Assembly that the probe into the incident would be entrusted to the CBI. Mr. Siddaramaiah’s decision was forced by an unrelenting Opposition offensive and “advice” from the Congress high command.

Hitting out at the Opposition for “politicising” the death of the officer, he told the House, amidst opposition sloganeering, that the case was referred to the CBI “to honour the sentiments of the parents of Ravi and the public.” He said the government earlier refused to hand over the case to the CBI as it would “lower the morale of the State police officers” and not because he did not trust the CBI.
Mr. Siddaramaiah informed Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh of the decision to seek a CBI probe. Mr. Singh is said to have assured him that the Centre would hand the case to the CBI after a formal request, expected to be sent on Monday night.
Meanwhile, the government on Monday requested the Karnataka High Court to vacate the interim order restraining the authorities from making any statement or publishing the interim probe report. Advocate-General Raivarma Kumar told a Bench of Justice S. Abdul Nazeer that the order rendered the government “defendless” in terms of countering the “politically motivated propaganda.”
