January 06, 2015 02:00 am | Updated 02:00 am IST - Bengaluru:

As many as 1.33 lakh primary school teachers will be roped in as enumerators to conduct the 20-day ‘caste census’, beginning April 11.

‘Legal hurdles cleared’

Briefing presspersons after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s meeting with deputy commissioners, chief executive officers of zilla panchayats, Social Welfare Minister H. Anjaneya said that legal hurdles pertaining to the deployment of teachers had been cleared “as the census would be conducted during summer vacation”.

Remuneration

It had also been decided to pay a remuneration of Rs. 6,000 to the teachers, 50 per cent of which would be paid in advance, he said.

“Each enumerator will have to collect details pertaining to 55 listed questions from 120 to 150 households.”

Terming it a major exercise, the Minister said it was being done for the first time after 1931. It would give the government a new yardstick while deciding facilities to be provided to people of different castes and communities based on their socio-economic status, Mr. Anjaneya added.

Software by BEL

Special software designed by Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) would be used to compile the enumeration details. Data entry operators would be deployed in each district, he said.
