Candidates to file papers for K.R. Pet bypolls today


Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and others expected to take part in rallies

Candidates from the three major political parties, for the December 5 byelections to K.R. Pet Assembly segment, are expected to display their show of strength in K.R. Pet on Monday by holding mega nomination-filing rallies.

Monday is the last day to file nomination papers , and Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and a host of political bigwigs are expected to take part in the rallies.

K.C. Narayana Gowda, disqualified K.R. Pet MLA, is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in the elections.

B.L. Devaraj and K.B. Chandrashekar, contestants from the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress respectively, are also filing their papers on Monday with processions, according to sources.

Mr. Chandrashekar is a former MLA, while Mr. Devaraj is an advocate.

Mr. Devaraj has requested a member of the family of the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to participate in the rally, a senior JD(S) member said.

A host of Congress leaders, including former Ministers M.S. Atmananda, N. Cheluvarayaswamy and P.M. Narendra Swamy, will take part in the procession for Mr. Chandrashekar, a senior Congress leader said.

Besides the Chief Minister, BJP State president Nalin Kumar Kateel, Deputy CM and Minister for Higher Education C.N. Ashwath Narayan, Law Minister J.C. Madhuswamy, Revenue Minister R. Ashok, MLA for Hassan Preetham Gowda, and others will be present while Mr. Gowda files the papers, said the BJP sources.

The supporters of the candidates are making arrangements for the rallies. They have already printed hoardings/flexes to welcome the leaders as well to wish their candidates, sources said.

The byelection was necessitated following the resignation of Mr. Gowda.
