Campaigning ends in Belagavi

The subdued campaign to the Urban Local Body polls came to an end across the district on Wednesday. Polling will be on August 31 and counting will be done on September 3.

There are 987 candidates in the fray for 329 seats in 14 ULBs. Half the seats are reserved for women. In the last elections, the government had reserved 33% seats for women.

As many as 14 candidates were elected unopposed across the district. Election officials rejected 182 of the 1,482 nominations. 299 withdrew papers. In a district with 48 lakh population, there are 4.14 lakh urban voters – 2.08 lakh women and 2.05 lakh men. They will vote in 544 EVMs at 453 polling stations. VVPAT units will not be used.

Based on the history of law and order violation and crime, poll officials have classified 134 booths as sensitive, 120 as hyper-sensitive and 189 as normal.

Mustering will be done in the 14 taluks on August 30. Poll officials will reach the mustering centres on Thursday morning. They will leave for the polling stations by evening.

Senior leaders like KPCC president Dinesh Gundurao, former CM and BJP leader Jagadish Shettar, and former MLA and JDS leader N.H. Konaraddi have toured the district to meet party workers and address street corner meetings.
