Byrasandra lake in Jayanagar got a fresh look after volunteers and pourakarmikas cleaned up the lakebed on Sunday. The lake, which was once spread across 12 acres, has now shrunk to a small portion of its original size, said Amith Amarnath of NGO Youth for Parivarthan which participated in the drive.

“A part of the lakebed had become a dumping ground for residents. Since morning, eight to 10 truckloads of waste have been cleared,” said Mr. Amarnath.

Around 70 volunteers from the NGO, along with pourakarmikas, removed unsegregated waste from the lakebed. The waste was segregated and dry waste sent to dry waste collection centres and the wet waste to composting centres, said Mr. Amarnath. Jayanagar councillor Gangambike Mallikarjun also lent support to the cleaning drive.
