Several persons mainly women staged a dharna here on Thursday, seeking construction of Ashraya houses for the poor people in the twin cities.

The agitation was carried out under the aegis of the Karnataka Samata Sena (KSS) and the Karnataka Rakshana Sena. Protesters staged a demonstration followed by a dharna before the office of the Municipal Commissioner on Lamington Road here.

They complained that despite repeated memoranda submitted, no concrete steps had been taken.

They said that meanwhile some vested interests were trying to cheat the gullible women on the pretext of providing Ashraya houses to them, which should be checked. Leading the protest was the KSS State president, Gurunath Ullikashi. He urged the Municipal Commissioner to meet the demand for houses. If the available land is inadequate for the purpose, multi-storeyed buildings should be built within the city limits.

The protesters then submitted a memorandum addressed to the Municipal Commissioner.
