BSP condemns Davangere incident

Activists of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) staged a protest here on Wednesday, condemning the incident of assault on Dalit writer Uchchangi Prasad at Davangere.

Addressing the protest meet, P. Kumar, president of the party’s district unit, said that the incident was a blatant attack on freedom of expression. Recalling the incidents of killing of M.M. Kalburgi, Govind Pansare and Narendra Dabholkar, he said that the reactionary forces were targeting writers and intellectuals, who had taken a firm stand against socio-economic disparities. There had been an organised effort to silence the voices of dissent, he said.

He suspected the involvement of right-wing extremist organisations in the incident. The government should order a thorough probe into the Davangere incident and bring the erring persons to book at the earliest. Karnataka was known for its culture of pluralism and tolerance. It was unfortunate that reactionary forces were trying to damage the fragile plural cultural fabric of the land, he said.

Functionaries of BSP Nandini and Suma took part in the protest.
