Bridge submerged near Savadatti-B

Following heavy rainfall in parts of southern Maharashtra, the inflow in some rivers in Belagavi district has increased. On Wednesday night, water began flowing over a bridge near Savadatti-B in Chikkodi taluk.

Due to large inflows into the river Krishna, the old low-lying bridge near Savadatti-B was submerged. There were no casualties or reports or damages as of Thursday.

The river bed was full and water began flowing quickly across the plains in Chikkodi taluk. Krishna’s tributaries - Panchaganga, Doodhganga and Vedaganga - too received heavy inflow.

However, Belagavi district is yet to receive its normal share of monsoon rains for the month. The district receives an annual aggregated average of 870 mm. Officials said after three weeks of the onset of monsoon, the district had got only 30% of the average monthly rainfall.

“We are hoping for better rainfall in coming days. The forecast has been positive,” said R. Ramachandran, chief executive officer of Belagavi Zilla Panchayat.
