Crops on several hectares were damaged following a breach in a sub-canal of Hemavathi Canal between Nagaruru-Margonahalli, K.R. Pet taluk, of the district.

The Bharatipura minor canal, near 7th mile, is suspected to have breached in the early hours of Tuesday. But, it was noticed at about 6 a.m. Measures were initiated to reduce the flow of water in the canal to lessen the damages and also to undertake the repair works, said sources in the Irrigation Department. The supply of water for irrigation was also affected and the Nagaruru-Chilladahalli road was partially damaged.

Agriculture, horticulture and commercial crops including paddy, banana, coconut, areca and vegetable crops were damaged as heavy quantum of water gushed into the adjoining fields, said the farmers.

The reason for the breach and the extent of damage are yet to be ascertained.
