The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (English)

Cast: Tom Kenny, Antonio Banderas, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Mr. Lawrence, Matt Berry

Director: Paul Tibbitt

First up, I have never watched the television show or the first movie. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this story of a sponge in square pants living under the sea in a town called Bikini Bottom. The movie directed by Paul Tibbitt, who has been writer, artist and show-runner on the television series since it began in 1999, is a joyous riot of animation, colour, jokes and adventure. On another level, the movie can be looked at as a parable too.

All is well in Bikini Bottom with Plankton trying to steal the secret crabby patty recipe from Mr Krabs. SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick are their usual sunny selves. However, when the secret recipe disappears, the good citizens of Bikini Bottom turn half crazed due to lack of the burgers and the town becomes a post apocalyptic wasteland.

It is up to SpongeBob to save the day with a little help from Plankton, who does quite understand teamwork.

The lines and visual gags are smart and funny.

Antonio Banderas is cool as a cucumber as the burger pirate up to no good. The mix of live action and animation gives a nice, quirky feel to the proceedings.

Go ahead, treat yourself and the bachcha party to a cheerful outing. All the cotton candy, ice cream cones (revenge is a dish best soft served!) and burgers in the movie might leave you craving the very same comestibles, but once in a while it is okay to indulge.
