Karnataka Janata Paksha president and former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said on Wednesday that the BJP government headed by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar should go.
Launching an attack on the government at a protest rally at Freedom Park here, he said people at the helm of affairs were not fit to run the State.
“The current dispensation has forgotten the needs of the poor. I do not trust this government at all,” he said.
Mr. Yeddyurappa said he and his supporters would go to any extent, including launching a ‘jail bharo’ agitation, to ensure that people of the State got a better government.
The protest was against the State government for allegedly stalling welfare schemes initiated by Mr. Yeddyurappa when he was the Chief Minister.
He said implementation of schemes such as Bhagyalakshmi, Sandhya Suraksha and widow pension scheme was stopped after he stepped down as Chief Minister. More than 10 lakh beneficiaries had been affected, he said.
“The government says it is verifying documents submitted by beneficiaries and unnecessarily delaying benefits to them,” he said.
He said when he was the Chief Minister, the government’s focus was on addressing problems of minorities, Dalits, farmers and the poor.
He said he would tour districts such as Bidar, Belgaum, Gulbarga and Yadgir and hold similar protests.
Mr. Yeddyurappa was detained and a large number of his supporters, including members of the KJP, when they were on their way from Freedom Park to lay siege to the Vidhana Soudha.
They were, however, released later.
