H.D. Deve Gowda, MP and national president of the Janata Dal (Secular) said on Saturday that both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress had failed to safeguard farmers from agrarian crisis, which had been prompting them to commit suicide.
“Both the Union and the State governments are looting money in the name of various schemes,” he said at a meeting of the district awareness committee here.
“Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came and returned. The government announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each to the families of farmers, who committed suicide. Has that move helped in stopping farmers from committing suicide? Instead, the announcement, in a way, will cause more suicides,” Mr. Gowda said.
Commenting that corruption had increased, he said that the officials were being given postings for money. “Is there any honest officer, who got a posting without paying money?” he asked.
