With the inclusion of Vijayapura among the list of cities to be developed under AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation), hopes have rekindled among the local people of seeing some considerable change in the civic facilities.
It may be noted that recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scheme to develop select cities of the country by providing better facilities and civic amenities. Vijayapura found its place in the list.
Though it was earlier said that the city would be included under the Heritage smart city category, it was later changed and included under the AMRUT scheme. The Union Government had selected 500 cities, including 26 from Karnataka, under it.
Since the entire project is sponsored by the Union Government, funds would be allocated based on the population of the cities, sources said.
Vijayapura, which was earlier known as Bijapur, is home to magnificent monuments that include Gol Gumbaz, Ibrahim Roza, Jama Masjid and Barah Kamaan, has a population of over three lakh and has a municipal corporation but has poor civic facilities. This is one of the primary reasons for the city failing to promote tourism.
With the Union Government granting separate funds for the development of the infrastructure, it is hoped that the city would see a facelift.
