‘Banks adjusting pension with farmers’ loan accounts’

H.S. Prakash, Hassan MLA, has alleged that banks are forcing farmers to commit suicide by adjusting the pension being provided to farmers under the social security schemes towards loans.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Prakash said that a bank in Hassan had adjusted the old-age pension of farmers towards loans. Chikke Gowda, farmer in Singapatna, committed suicide, recently. He had taken a loan of Rs. 30,000 from Vijaya Bank. As he could not repay the loan, the bank adjusted the pension credited to his account with the loan instalment. In a similar case, Dubsi Gowda, a farmer, had taken loan from another bank. The bank officials adjusted the subsidy on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) credited to his account towards loan.

Blaming the banks’ attitude as one of the reasons for the increase in the number of farmers’ suicides, Mr. Prakash urged the district administration to instruct all banks not to harass farmers for repayment of loans.
