H. Kantharaj, Chairman of State Backward Classes Commission, addressing presspersons in Udupi on Friday.

The State Backward Classes Commission held a public hearing at the District Offices Complex on Friday.

Addressing presspersons after the public hearing, H. Kanatharaj, Chairman of the Commission, said that the commission received applications for inclusion or change of a caste to or from a category, for inclusion in the list of backward classes and for using a synonym for a caste.

The idea behind the commission visiting the districts including Udupi was that it did not want people to go all the way to Bengaluru.

Socio-economic survey

The commission has so far visited seven districts. All the districts will submit the results of the Socio-economic survey to it by October 30.

The Udupi District Administration has given a brief note on the socio-economic survey to it.

The population of Udupi district had shown a growth of 6.5 per cent from 11.77 lakh in 2011 to 12.53 lakh in 2015. The commission had received 10 applications during its sitting here.

They included applications from Konkana Kharvi, Somakshatriya, Sthanik Brahmin, Pariayala, Devadiga, Pangadagara, Gola and Shettigar communities, Mr. Kantharaj said.
