Condemning the hike in the prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), several autorickshaw drivers and owners staged a demonstration at Kittur Chennamma Circle here on Thursday.
They raised slogans against the Union government for the price hike.
Addressing protesters, president of the Hubli Autorickshaw Owners’ and Drivers’ Association Shekharaiah Mathapati and general secretary Pundalik Badiger said that by hiking the gas prices by Rs. 11.50 a litre, the Union government had further increased the burden on autorickshaw drivers and owners.
They said that apart from the steady increase in diesel prices, the price of spare parts of autorickshaws had also gone up. Mr. Shekharaiah said that autorickshaw fares in Hubli were revised two years ago, and although the diesel prices had increased several times since then, the fares had not been revised so far.
Protesters submitted a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister to the Hubli taluk authorities.
