Autorickshaw driver-turned politician Kumar, alias auto Kumar, was elected vice-president of K.R. Pet Town Municipal Council (TMC) on Wednesday.

The young Congress member defeated his nearest rival of the Janata Dal (Secular), Koli Nagaraju, in the election.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members joined hands with the Congress to elect Mr. Kumar as Town Municipal Council vice-president, who secured 17 votes to the six secured by Mr. Nagaraju.

“The autorickshaw has been my livelihood for several years,” he told presspersons after the victory.

The election was necessitated by the resignation of Town Municipal Ccouncil vice-president H.K. Ashok, who had to step down as per the recent power-sharing agreement.

The Congress has 13 members and the Janata Dal (S) five in the 23-member TMC.

While an independent member is representing the council, the BJP has four members. Autorickshaw drivers celebrated Mr. Kumar’s victory by distributing sweets among the people.
