An autorickshaw got gutted after catching fire at Kalasawadi in Mysuru on Monday.

However, the driver and the occupants escaped.

Though the Fire and Emergency Services Personnel tried to douse the fire, Mysuru District Fire Officer Gururaj K.T. told The Hindu that the vehicle, running on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), was completely gutted except for its chassis.

Mr. Gururaj said that the mishap could have occurred due to the leakage of gas. “Many autos running on gas do not have an RTO-approved gas kit. Even if they have one, it will be poorly maintained. Many drivers do some patchwork even if they find a leakage in the pipeline and continue to run the vehicles exposing them and the passengers to the risk,” Mr. Gururaj said. “When there is a leakage in the pipeline, a spark is enough to catch fire.”Meanwhile, city police officials said that they were unable to identify the driver or the owner of the vehicle so far.

“We have not received any complaint so far. We are not sure how many people were travelling in the auto when it caught fire. By the time police reached the spot, nobody was there,” said a police official from Metagalli police station.
