Association seeks ban on boats fishing using lights

The Malpe Fishermen’s Deep Sea Trawl Boat Association has urged the district administration to ban fishing done by using lights by the purse seine boats in the sea.

A delegation led by Kishore D. Suvarna, president of the association, met Deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, and urged her to take immediate action on Wednesday.

Mr. Suvarna said that some purse seine boats were conducting fishing using lights violating the orders of the Union and State governments and the courts. Fishing using lights was totally unscientific and had been completely banned in the State.

While this order was being followed in Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada districts, it was not being properly implemented in Udupi district. If fishing using lights was allowed, it would lead to fish famine.

It was in protest against fishing using lights that the deep sea trawlers from Malpe had not ventured in the sea since February 27. Nearly 1,000 deep sea trawlers were anchored at the Malpe Fisheries Harbour. This had affected the livelihood of over 8,000 fishermen and a large number of people who were indirectly dependent on it.

Though the matter had been brought to the notice of the Department of Fisheries and Coastal Security Police, no action was taken.

The association had also urged the district administration a few days ago to take action but to no avail, he said.

‘Direction issued’

Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, Deputy Commissioner, said that she had already directed the Department of Fisheries and Coastal Security Police to take action three days ago. She said she would send a remainder again on the matter.

Nisha James, Superintendent of Police, said that the Fisheries Department had taken action against over 40 purse seine boats and had also seized generators from 12 boats.
