As inflow into KRS falls, so does hope of a full reservoir

The rate of inflow into KRS came down to 2,439 cusecs on Thursday.

With rainfall reducing in the catchments of Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) in Kodagu district, inflow into the reservoir in Mandya district has reduced significantly.

The rate of inflow, which was hovering between 5,000 cusecs and 9,000 cusecs till Wednesday this month, came down to 2,439 cusecs on Thursday. The outflow rate was measured at 1,074 cusecs. With the inflow considerably declining, the possibility of the reservoir reaching its maximum level of 124.80 feet this season is bleak, say officials of the Irrigation Department.

The reservoir, which provides water to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, has not attained the maximum level since 2013 because of repeated monsoon failure.

At 6 a.m. on Thursday, the KRS level stood at 114 ft. as against the maximum of 124.8 ft. The level was 81.69 ft on the same day last year.

The reservoir is falling short by 13.151 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) to reach the full gross storage capacity (49.452 tmcft). Hence, disappearance of rains in the catchments and subsequent poor inflow rate has diminished the hopes of KRS reaching the full reservoir level this season, say officials.

The gross storage of KRS was 35.937 tmcft on Thursday morning, while the live storage was 31 tmcft. The maximum live storage of KRS is 45.051 tmcft. The live storage on the corresponding day last year was 3.172 tmcft.

The inflow rate was hovering between 200 and 380 cusecs from March to April this year. It began to rise, with 528 cusecs, only from May 29. It increased to 601 cusecs on June 14; 997 on June 26; 2,746 on June 28; and 6,112 cusecs on June 29.

The gradual increase in the flow of water was observed from July to September with the catchments in Kodagu and upstream areas of KRS witnessing heavy-to-very heavy rain.

According to the Irrigation Department, the maximum inflow rate this season — 27,680 cusecs — was recorded on August 30.
