The long-pending demand for an armed forces memorial in Mysuru has received a shot in the arm with the State government giving administrative approval for the project and sanctioning a first instalment of ₹50 lakh for its construction.
The armed forces memorial, or war memorial, which is expected to come up near the NCC Group headquarters premises, adjacent to the office of the Deputy Commissioner, is estimated to cost about ₹1.41 crore. The government has issued orders to release ₹50 lakh during 2019-20 to the Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru, through the Department of Kannada and Culture, for the construction of the memorial.
Welcoming the development, Mandetira N. Subramani of VeKare Ex-Servicemen Trust (VKET) said a proposal to construct a memorial in honour of the soldiers who had fought in wars or war-like situations was originally conceived in 2000-01 and submitted to the then Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru. It was eventually approved under the coalition rule by the then Minister for Kannada and Culture Jaimala in March 2019 following efforts by the former Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru, D. Randeep, he said.
The Government Order has set two conditions, including periodic submission of audit reports on the expenditure of funds along with utilisation certificates. Meanwhile, the district administration is preparing to invite tenders for the project.
