Another deadline of July 31 to clear sugarcane dues

Unhappy Opposition holds dharna, stages walkout

Under pressure from agitating farmers and the Opposition parties, Karnataka Government on Tuesday announced July 31 as the deadline to clear the dues to sugarcane farmers for 2013-14 of Rs. 923 crore.

Sugar Minister H.S. Mahadeva Prasad said out of the dues of Rs. 200 per tonne, the Government would pay Rs. 100 out its coffers by July 10 and the remaining Rs. 100 by the end of the month after auctioning the seized stocks from defaulting factories.

However, not content with the setting of yet another deadline, JD (S) walked out while the BJP staged a 'dharna'. Opposition leader in the Assembly Jagadeesh Shettar demanded that the entire arrears, including Rs. 2,120 dues for 2014-15, should be paid in one go.
