Although the district police have cracked the case of sexual assault and murder of a 17-year-old minor at Henberu village in 48 hours, there is lot of anguish here that the life of an intelligent and disciplined girl had ended so.
The minor used to walk 5 km daily from her house in Henberu to her college and return in the evening. The area is remote with a hillock and woods in some parts.
“She walked five kilometres to and fro in this terrain daily and got 94 per cent in SSLC. It is no mean achievement,” said a police officer here on Saturday.
After finding her body in Henberu on June 17, the police also checked her belongings in the course of investigations. They found her mobile telephone and checked.
“The girl never spoke to anyone after 6.30 p.m. on her mobile. We checked her messages. All her messages were to her teachers, asking them one or other doubt regarding the subjects. She was a person of great integrity,” said the officer.
Transport facilities
There is an opinion that this tragedy could have been avoided if there was bus facility to the village. The people have been demanding a bus to Henberu. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar, who visited Henberu on June 19, promised a bus service to the village as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Navodaya Charitable Trust M.N. Rajendra Kumar, who also visited the village on June 19, said that the Trust would run two vehicles – once in the morning and in the evening to carry students till the authorities provided bus service or the end of the monsoon.
At the Regional Transport Authority meeting held here on Saturday, Deputy Commissioner R. Vishal said that all efforts would be made to provide bus services to remote areas in the district.
People’s anger
Angry people demanded to see the face of the accused when he was taken for inspection of the spot of crime at Henberu. However, the police managed to pacify the crowd and urged them not to obstruct the investigations.
The police were met with the same situation when they came to the Byndoor police station.
Meanwhile, Gopal Poojary, MLA, told presspersons in Byndoor on Saturday that he had submitted a proposal to the State government to construct a girls hostel for the government pre-university college here.
He said that would try to get a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh as soon as possible for the family of the deceased.
