Following the increase of inflow in to the Almatti reservoir, power generation, which had stopped for the last two months, has resumed from Friday.
According to Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited (KBJNL) sources, the inflow has increased after Maharashtra released water through the dams following heavy rain in the Western Ghats. Just about a fortnight ago, the water level in the reservoir had dipped almost to its dead storage, but with the increasing inflow, the dam is gradually filling up.
On Saturday, the inflow for the first time had crossed one lakh cusecs, which enabled KBJNL officials to release water to the power generating unit located next to the dam.
As of now, the officials are releasing only 5,000 cusecs of water to the power generation unit, which is now producing 30 MW of power. It has a total of six units with the combined generation capacity of 290 MW.
This 5,000 cusecs of water is not only helping the generation of power, but is now adding to Narayanpura Dam in Yadgir district.
“The outflow had completed stopped owing to limited water in the dam. But following the rain in the Western Ghats, the inflow into the dam has increased, which has made us start the outflow for the first time this year,” official sources said.
The official said that since even the Narayanpura Dam had dried up, the release of water would help increase of storage for drinking and irrigation purpose.
Storage increased
On Monday, though the inflow reduced to 51,000 cusecs, however, the storage in the dam has increase from 47 TMC on Saturday to 58 TMC of Monday.
The total storage capacity of the dam is 123 TMC. Last year, by this time, there was neither inflow nor outflow from the dam, the officials said.
