The central business district of Hubballi city, especially the Durgad Bail locality, witnessed a flurry of activity in view of Id-ul-Fitr as Muslims poured in large numbers for shopping.

While police officials were busy making security arrangements and imposing traffic curbs on the Id day, devout Muslims were busy making last-minute purchases.

Shopkeepers busy

The police had barred entry of vehicles to the locality. On Friday evening, the locality was so crowded that it seemed as if there was no space left. Shopkeepers, especially street vendors who had set up temporary stalls at Durgad Bail and Shah Bazar, were busy throughout the day.

Meanwhile, the Hubballi- Dharwad police have made elaborate security arrangements for the mass prayers to be held on Saturday and imposed restrictions on vehicular movement till its completion.

Strategic points

The police are not taking any chance in the wake of a few instances that threatened to ignite communal violence recently.

Additional forces have been deployed in sensitive areas and strategic points and also near places of religious worship.

The two Idgah Maidans in Hubballi would have security cover and some of the roads leading to the Idgah Maidans would be barricaded to check movement of vehicles.

People can use the following roads to reach the Idgah Maidan: Station Road, Radhakrishna Galli, Shaw Bazar, Bandiwad Base Mosque to New Durgada Bail, Broadway, Lamington Road, Koppikar Road to Chitaguppi Circle, Shivaji Chowk, Pendar Galli, Kalammana Agasi, Mulla Oni, Dakappa Circle, Kaulpet, P.B. Road, Chatnimath Cross to M.T. Mill, Karwar Road, Keshwapur Circle, Desai Circle to Idgah Maidan, K.H. Patil Road under-bridge, Ambedkar Circle and Dakappa Circle.

Vehicles from Gadag and the railway station should take a diversion at Pinto Point and reach New Cotton Market via Desai Cross.

The Police Commissioner said that no vehicles would be allowed to go towards Pinto Point from Desai Cross. Those from Cotton Market will be allowed to go to Navalgund Road.

Vehicles from Bengaluru proceeding to Dharwad will have to take the Toravi Hakkal-M.T. Mill-Vani Vilas Circle-Hosur Circle route.

The space opposite Indira Glass House would act as temporary bus station as Old KSRTC Bus station will be temporarily closed during the prayers.
