Admission deadline: SC seeks Centre, AICTE response

The Supreme Court on Monday sought a response from the Centre and the All India Council for Technical Education on a plea by an association of 151 unaided private engineering colleges seeking extension of the admission deadline till September 30.

Admitting the petition filed by the Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges Association, a Bench led by Justice P.C. Ghose agreed to hear the response of the Centre and the AICTE on September 14.

The association said the admission deadline of August 15 fixed for engineering colleges should be extended in view of re-examination of the All India Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Test (AIPMT) on July 25. Arguing for the association, senior advocate Kapil Sibal and advocate Rohit Bhat contended that seats in engineering colleges were likely to fall vacant as students with Physics, Chemistry, Math and Biology subjects preferred admission to medical colleges.

“Possibility of the seats falling vacant in the engineering colleges due to the re-conduct of the AIPMT is real. The consequences would be irreversible as the last date for admission to engineering colleges has been fixed as August 15,” the petition said. After the Supreme Court scrapped the AIPMT on June15 due to large-scale cheating, the exam was re-held on July 25 and the results declared on August 17.

In its petition, the association claimed that students who were otherwise unable to gain entry into medical colleges would have got admission into engineering colleges.

However, by retaking the AIPMT, if eligible, these students would now stand a chance of gaining admission into medical colleges and would vacate the engineering seats held by them.
