Activists call for abrogating law which ‘discriminates’ against men

May 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - MYSURU:

Several activists under the aegis of Centre for Men’s Rights staged a demonstration in the city on Tuesday demanding the scrapping of Section 498 A of the Indian Penal Code, the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and similar laws which they alleged suffered from a gender bias. The demonstrators raised slogans and said most of them were victims of the misuse of Section 498 A, under which, if a woman files a complaint of dowry harassment, the accused could be taken into custody by the police without sufficient evidence or investigation.

The organisation said that it also aims to reduce suicide rate of men by promoting laws “which do no marginalise men or undermine their role in families and society”.

2 lakh cases

The activists claimed that there were nearly 2 lakh false cases filed under Section 498 A in the last two years.
