Activist calls for equality in all sectors

Writer and women’s activist Shanta Imrapur said that although 70 per cent women work in the agricultural sector, only five per cent own land. Delivering her presidential address at the first women’s Kannada literary meet organised by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat here on Wednesday, she said that these women take part in all phases of farming, yet when it comes to ownership of land, their share is negligible. Prof. Imrapur said that nearly 60 per cent women contributed towards food production in the country, but only 10 per cent of its revenue reaches them.

“Even in wages, there is discrimination. Men get higher wage compared to women despite working for equal hours,” she said. Prof. Imrapur regretted that despite women playing a major role in the agricultural sector, their problems found no place in the agitations of farmers’ union.
