A woman and her son, who made a charge of land grabbing against former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar’s brother Pradeep Shettar, attempted suicide by consuming poison in front of the office of Hubballi Tahsildar at the Mini Vidhana Soudha here on Friday.

The mother and son were among the members of Sheik family who were staging a protest in front of the Mini Vidhana Soudha to highlight their grievances. The family members had complained earlier also to various authorities seeking justice. They had alleged that Pradeep Shettar had grabbed their ancestral properly on the pretext of getting their property divided among the family members.

Sayeeda Sheikh and Jaffar Sab Sheikh consumed poison saying that they were forced to take the extreme step as no government authority was keen on helping them saying that the other party (Pradeep Shettar) was highly influential. The land in question is located at Tarihal on the outskirts of Hubballi.

The mother and son were immediately rushed to Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital and according to hospital sources, their condition is said to be out of danger.

Speaking to presspersons at KIMS Hospital, Sayeeda Sheikh’s husband Alavali and daughter Razia said that they had even received threat calls from unknown persons after they started approaching various authorities seeking justice.
