The State government has decided to withdraw conservation reserve status to the Kappatagudda biodiversity spot in Gadag district.

Samaj Parivartan Samudaya has extended support to the ongoing agitation against the government’s decision to withdraw the status of reserve for the Kappatagudda hill ranges in Gadag district.

Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, samudaya founder-president S.R. Hiremath said that the samudaya would fully support the agitation spearheaded by the Tontada Math seer Siddalinga Swami seeking steps to preserve and conserve the eco-sensitive Kappatagudda hill ranges, which is known for its biodiversity.

He said that certain firms that had plundered natural resources in Ballari earlier were now eyeing the Kappatagudda hill ranges where precious minerals and ore deposits have been traced. They are behind the government’s move to withdraw the reservation conserve status for Kappatagudda to allow plundering of ore deposits here with scant regard for environmental issues.

The samduaya, in association with other like-minded organisations, has planned an awareness jatha from Siddaramanahundi, native place of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, over several issues, including corruption and environmental degradation, in February or March. Earlier, it was planned to conclude the jatha at Haveri. But now it had been decided to extend it till Gadag and include the issue of conservation of Kappatagudda on the list of issues over which this jatha would be taken out, he added.

Meeting

The samudaya and other like-minded organisations will hold a discussion and public meeting at the Gandhi Bhavan in Bengaluru on January 5 to deliberate over bringing in overall changes in the executive, the judiciary and other issues concerning the public. It would be the continuation of similar meetings held a few months ago in Dharwad. The date of the proposed jatha too would be finalised at the meeting, Mr. Hiremath said.
