No extra work for anganwadi workers: Centre writes to States

Taking serious note of the increased malnutrition cases among children in the country, the Union government had written to the respective State governments directing them not to assign any work to the anganwadi workers other than their designated works, Union Minister for Woman and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has said.

She told presspersons here on Monday that it was a matter of concern that despite nutritional food being given to the children through the anganwadis, the malnutrition level had only increased. “The increasing malnutrition among children is an indication that the existing system is not working. The whole system needs to be overhauled and the government has already initiated steps. You will see the changes soon”.

She said that anganwadi workers’ only work was taking care of the children and they should not be assigned any other work. “We have already written to the State governments on the issue”, she said.

Training

Regarding a query on poor girls from various districts of North Karnataka being sent to northern States in the country in the guise of marriage, only to be exploited, the Minister said that the issue would also be included in the training to be given to the Mahila Police Volunteers, who the Centre planned to appoint soon.

Ms. Gandhi said that in addition to keeping a watch on atrocities against women and children, including dowry harassment, physical violence, child marriages, trafficking and reporting them to the police department, they would also be asked to create awareness on such marriages.
