An angry mob vandalised the police station and set vehicles on fire after a person held on charge of sand extraction died, allegedly in custody, in Lakshmeshwar in Gadag district here on Sunday.

The deceased Shivanand Ganiger (30) was working as a driver of private lorry and resident of Battur village in Shirahatti taluk. The situation remained tense after the irate mob vandalised the police station. Additional forces have been deployed and prohibitory orders have been clamped in the town.

Gadag SP Santosh Babu said there was confusion about the incident and an inquiry was going on. The real cause for the death will be known after the autopsy report is received, he said. However, he denied reports of lock up death.
