Ramanagaram town, in the drought-hit Ramanagaram district that has witnessed over 100 farmer suicides since 2015, is all set for a unique programme. The district administration, in association with private firms, has organised a mega marathon on February 26 to educate people on water preservation.

The district has 1,381 lakes. Of these, 1,234 had completely dried in by 2016. The Hindu had carried a special report (‘1,234 lakes in Ramanagaram, 159 in Mandya run dry’) on April 28, 2016. The situation is not different this year.

“It is high time people are made aware of prevention of exploitation of groundwater and judicious use of the same,” B.R. Mamatha, Deputy Commissioner, Ramanagaram, said. Ms. Mamatha, who conceptualised the event, told this correspondent said that it has been received tremendous response from the people.

Over 1,500 runners, including many from other countries, have registered to take part in the event, she said.

Impact of drought

The impact of the drought on farmers, water bodies, livestock and agricultural activities in previous years were immeasurable. This has instigated the district administration to organise the event in association with ‘Yellow and Red Foundations’, an NGO that works in education and other fields.

The run will be flagged off by actor Radhika Pandit. The number of runners is expected to reach 3,000 by Saturday. Those interested can register online on shobha@yellowandred.in. Call 080-27275624.
