MCC seeks additional 60 MLD from Kabini scheme

With drinking water scarcity affecting parts of Krishnaraja Assembly constituency in Mysuru, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to increase water supply from the Kabini, from the existing 60 MLD to 120 MLD.

Mayor B.L. Bhyrappa told The Hindu that he has already given a representation to the Chief Minister and is hopeful of a favourable decision soon.

The drinking water needs of 50 to 60 village are met from the existing 60 MLD drawn from Kabini. With water being supplied to new layouts coming up outside the Outer Ring Road, there is pressure on the available drinking water, Mr. Bhyrappa said.

Meanwhile, sources in the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board (KUWSSB) said the total capacity of Kabini drinking water scheme is 180 MLD of which only the first phase of 60 MLD has been implemented.

“If the capacity is to be increased to 120 MLD, we need to install additional pumping equipment at Bidaragudu, where the jack well is situated, and a treatment plant at Pinjrapole from where water is pumped to different parts of the city,” a KUWSSB official said.

Also, there is a need for the authorities to obtain sanction for extra power required for the additional pumps.

“There is only need for additional pumps and power. There is no need for additional pipeline for the purpose,” the official added.
