Lockdown at Peenya Industrial Area

The two-day strike by workers of several garment factories and other industries resulted in a complete lockdown of the Peenya Industrial Area on Tuesday. The city, which is a hub for the ready-made garment industry, is expected to take huge losses once the dust settles.

“There are a lot of misconceptions among the workers. The leaders need to be contacted and asked to appeal to the workers to stop the violence. The rules have been put into place to protect the earnings of the workers. I don’t know who has instigated this protest, but the losses will run into several crores,” said Tallam R. Dwarakanath, President, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

In Peenya, which was the worst affected on Tuesday, industry owners were a scared lot as moving around the estate became impossible. “There has been a complete lockdown of the estate. We think losses might be around Rs. 1,000 crore for two days. However, it will be impossible to calculate damages till the situation is resolved,” said Venkatesh D.T., immediate past president of the Peenya Industries’ Association.
