A farmer, reportedly upset over mounting debts, committed suicide by consuming poison at Navalgund taluk of Dharwad district on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Basappa Goolappa Kotabagi (54) of Morab village in Navalgund taluk.

According to preliminary reports, Basappa had availed a loan of Rs. 50,000 from Vijaya Bank, besides other non-institutional loans. He was unable to repay the loans because of drought. Since he did not have the resources, he reportedly failed to take up sowing in his three acre land for the kharif season.

Navalgund police have registered a case and are investigating.
