A farmer, unable to repay the loans he borrowed from a bank and a microfinance institution, committed suicide by jumping into the Tunga backwaters near Kusuburu in N.R.Pura taluk on Monday. Venkaramana Naika (65) owned four acres and 13 guntas of land. He had borrowed Rs.5 lakh from Syndicate Bank at Muttinakoppa, besides Rs. 58,000 from a microfinance institution. As the yield in his farm was low he was worried over clearing the loans, according to his son Rathish.
He plunged into the Tunga early morning on Monday. Later his body was recovered. N.R.Pura police have registered a complaint.
