Kukkarahalli lake will soon get a new lease of life with the launch of development works, including removal of silt from the lakebed for increasing the water storage capacity.
University of Mysore is the caretaker of the lake, which is a joggers’ hub. The lake was crying for attention with freshwater entry into the waterbody blocked. Sewage flow has contaminated it.
In their bid to turn the lake into a tourist spot, the Tourism Department and the Lake Development Authority have jointly set aside ₹3 crore to carry otu development work, including increasing the height of lake bund and widening it, building a parking facility, installing toilets and arch gates, and constructing yoga and walkers’ shelters.
Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep and acting UoM Vice-Chancellor Yashwanth Dongre gave a start to the works on Tuesday. A sum of ₹25 lakh will be spent on removing silt from the lakebed and clearing weeds from the surface.
Building a orchidarium, butterfly park, bamboo park, adventure park and an aquarium are the other works planned for ₹34 lakh.
