February 09, 2017 12:32 am | Updated 12:32 am IST - HUBBALLI:

The Hubballi-Dharwad units of the All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF), Bharat Mukti Morcha and Rashtriya Basav Dal have urged the municipal authorities to rename Unkal lake here as Chennabasava Sagar and take steps to preserve it.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, seer Korneshwar Swami said that the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) had passed a resolution regarding naming the lake after the 12th century reformist Chennabasava on January 16, 2003. However, that resolution was not executed so far.

Rashtriya Basava Dal leader and advocate K.S. Korishettar said they would also press for steps to preserve and conserve the lake that is subjected to pollution and encroachment.

“We will also press for safeguarding this lake and contemplate holding Shramdan shortly,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Korishettar and others clarified that they have not demanded the removal of the statue of Swami Vivekananda in the middle of the lake.
