The State government has ordered a probe by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the murder of Kannada scholar M.M. Kalburagi in Dharwad on Sunday.

The Government has also decided to write to the CBI seeking probe by it into killing of Kalburagi.

“The CID will take up the case immediately. Later, the CID will handover the case to the CBI”, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra told presspersons after the Cabinet meeting.

“The CBI takes time to initiate the probe. Till then the CID will conduct the probe” the Minister said.

Mr. Kalburagi was shot dead at point blank range by an unidentified assailant at his residence in Kalyan Nagar in Dharwad on Sunday morning. While there have been rumours of a property dispute, the family has alleged that he was killed for speaking the truth. Mr. Kalburagi had drawn ire of right-wing hardliners and was even given police security till a month ago.
