The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will face the reported move of Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj's to consider giving sanction for prosecution of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa vis-à-vis land deal issue “politically and legally” come what may.
Sources close to the Chief Minister said this was the outcome of the meeting held by Mr. Yeddyurappa with senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley here on Tuesday. Besides, being a politician, Mr. Jaitley is a leading lawyer and his advice on the matter relating to the constitutional subject would be of immense help to Mr. Yeddyurappa. Earlier on Monday, the Chief Minister met party chief Nitin Gadkari at Mumbai and discussed the issue.
Asked whether the sudden convening of the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, that too within 24 hours of the last meeting, was anything to do with the Governor's action or will there be any Cabinet resolution denouncing the Governor's move, the sources said: “The Cabinet meeting is mainly to discuss the additional allotment of men and material sought by the judicial commission that has been appointed to go into the land denotification issue.”
Ministers V.S. Acharya, Suresh Kumar and Basavaraj Bommai and the State's special representative here V. Dhananjay Kumar accompanied Mr. Yeddyurappa in the talks.
Mr. Bhardwaj had said that he was studying a request by Justice Lawyers Forum seeking permission to prosecute the Chief Minister and Home Minister R. Ashok on the land deal issue. He termed the petition “ticklish”. It is learnt that the Governor is getting opinion of constitutional experts on how to go about it without getting himself entangled in constitutional imbroglio.
