Cricketer Amit Mishra, who is accused of assaulting his female friend at a hotel on Residency Road here last month, was questioned for nearly three hours on Tuesday before being arrested and later released on bail.
The 32-year-old leg spinner, who represented the country in the recent one-dayers against South Africa, flew into Bengaluru on Tuesday to appear before the Ashok Nagar police who had summoned him for investigation into the assault case.
The complainant, 34-year-old film producer from Bengaluru, lodged a police complaint on September 27 stating that the cricketer verbally abused her, twisted her right arm and threw a kettle at her inside the room of a luxury hotel on Residency Road. Police registered a case under five sections of the IPC, including assault intending to outrage her modesty, attacking with weapon and criminal intimidation.
Mr. Mishra tried to divert the course of investigation, sources in the Police Department said.
“Mishra attempted to divert the case by making some claims about the complainant which we believe is irrelevant. However, we have established that the assault had indeed taken place in the hotel room and thereafter he was placed under arrest,” said an investigating officer
“When we confronted him with medical records and evidence that was before us, he could not deny the attack on the woman,” the official said.
Earlier, Mishra arrived at the Cubbon Park police station premises around 10.35 a.m. and was quizzed by investigating officers till 1.15 p.m. After his arrest, he was whisked away in a police vehicle and was taken to the Ashok Nagar police station on Commissariat Road to complete formalities and was released on bail.
Sources said that Mishra was interrogated by a team of officials from Ashok Nagar police limits.
Meanwhile, the complainant told The Hindu , she had also met the investigators later on Tuesday to find out the development in the case. “On a personal note I am upset over the turn of events as he (Mishra) is a long time friend. The assault has driven me to lodge a police complaint. Now let the law take its course,” she said.
The Ashok Nagar police are expected to submit a final report in court in the coming week.
