96 areas in city declared as dengue-affected

As many as 96 localities in the city have been identified as dengue-affected areas and over 36 villages in six taluks are declared dengue-affected.

Hebbal, Kuvempunagar, Kalyanagiri, Aravindnagar, Vidyaranyapura, N.R. Mohalla, T.K. Layout Janatha colony, KIADB industrial layout are among the 96 localities (residential extensions) affected in the city.

Chidambar, district vector-borne diseases control officer, told The Hindu that the Health Department considered an area with more than three positive cases as dengue-affected.

Many villages like Ilawala, Koorgalli, Inkal in Mysuru taluk have been declared as dengue-affected. Similarly, some villages in Hunsuru, K.R. Nagar, Nanjangudu, T. Narasipura and H.D. Kote taluks have also been declared dengue-hit, Mr. Chidambar said.

A Rapid Response Team and surveillance teams have been deployed to enlighten people about the disease and collect blood samples from those who have dengue symptoms. The teams, if needed, would shift people, whose platelets counts had come down considerably low and needed admission, to K.R. Hospital.

They ask people to use mosquito nets and cover their windows with a mosquito mesh.

Mr. Chidambar further said that the department, with the help of civic bodies and the gram panchayat, is carrying out fogging in the affected areas to destroy mosquito breeding grounds.

He also issued circulars to all the private hospitals to send blood samples to the district lab at the District Health Office for dengue confirmation.

In August, the lab checked over 240 samples of which 37 were found to be positive, Mr. Chidambar said, adding that over 1,400 samples were tested so far this year from January 1 and of them 309 cases were found positive.
